POSITION SUMMARY:                

This position is responsible for administering and supporting the company’s workers’ compensation and leave management programs.  Ensure that all workers compensation claims and medical leave claims are handled thoroughly and efficiently. Ensure compliance of required company procedures/policies as well as compliance with all applicable multi-state and federal related laws (regulations/requirements). Determines liability, secures information, review coverage’s, and makes recommendations. Viewed as key resource in given field for department and provides technical advice.   • A minimum of two (2) years’ experience in workers’ compensation claims management at industrial site
  • A minimum of two (2) years’ experience managing FMLA (Family Medical Leave of Absence) matters
  • Working knowledge of federal guidelines pertaining to claim procedures and legal requirements to include ADA, ADAAA, FMLA, Workers’ Compensation.
  • Working knowledge of methods, techniques, and procedures involved in workers’ comp, FMLA and compliance issues.
  • Working knowledge of claim value and be able to assign values to cases being handled
  • Intermediate computer skills in programs such as MS Word, Excel & Outlook to include reports, charts, pivot tables, create formulas, schedule calendars and events, etc.
  • Must be able to effectively communicate orally and in writing in English and in Spanish at an advanced level
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with customers, vendors and fellow employees.
  • Ability to think logically and analyze (problem solve; collect data and draw valid conclusions)
  • Ability to follow procedures and instructions precisely
  • Ability to work independently, multitask and possess strong initiative
  • Ability to coordinate programs, prepare a variety of reports and maintain accurate records.

  • Must be able to work out of both Office and Port Operations locations partially and/or fully


  • Working knowledge of multi-state regulations and the Longshore Act.




  • Prepare and initiate all necessary documents pertaining to absences (Medical leave, FMLA, and worker’s compensation) and maintain communication with the employee, supervisor, adjuster, Nurse Case Manager (NCM, when applicable) throughout the duration of leave of absence.
  • Enter and create all WC injury reports in the database and generate state forms (Notice of Injury) and maintains records by updating records management system.
  • Prepare reports by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing information.
  • Liaise with third party adjuster, case nurse manager, and legal counsel on handling of the claims. 
  • Develop, implement and ensure compliance of all workers’ compensation policies/procedures in accordance with each state and federal regulations.
  • Prevent and reduce accidents by studying accident reports (analyzing the root cause, recognizing trends in types of accidents, coaching supervisors and employees, perform research and provide recommendations to mitigate).
  • Maintain communication with all levels of state and federal compliance bodies as necessary, third party adjuster and with in-house counsel.
  • Maintain communication and oversight over TPA (third party administrator) to ensure employee is paid/reimbursed accordingly and ensure schedule appointments, surgery, second opinion, IR, MMI are addressed promptly.


  • Provide back up and support to areas including but not limited to benefits and payroll.
  • Provide support during audits
  • Perform other additional related duties as assigned



  • The employee is continuously required to walk, talk and hear.
  • The employee is frequently required to sit and stand.
  • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 15 pounds.
  • The employee must frequently use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms.
  • The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance; stoop, kneel crouch, or craw; and smell.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.



  • Report safety hazards

    Receives direct supervision from the Human Resources Manager and Human Resources Regional Manager, indirect supervision from the Director of Human Resources. Does not exercise supervision over any other position but may request assistance from the department’s administrative staff.



  • Work is performed primarily in office, vehicles; may be exposed to changing weather (temperature & humidity) and outdoor environments, during day and night shifts.
  • The employee occasionally works near moving trucks/equipment and/or mechanical parts.
  • The employee is occasionally exposed to dust, fumes, and airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals.
  • May be required to work on holidays and weekends as necessary.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate.
