POSITION SUMMARY:

This position provides physical labor toward the production of daily operations for the Container Mechanic department.  It is primarily responsible for inspecting, washing, tagging, preparing and painting empty containers. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. QUALIFICATIONS:

Required

  • Experience and ability to use common hand and power tools such as screwdrivers, saws, drills, wrenches, and hammers.
  • Ability to communicate at a basic level in English (verbal/written).
  • Organizational and time management skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to obtain internal forklift certification within 90 days of employment.
  • Ability to accurately process alpha/numeric information.
  • Ability to work independently with limited supervision and strong initiative.
  • Ability to think logically, follow procedures, instructions and make sound decisions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with customers, vendors and fellow employees.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, extended hours, weekends, and/or holidays, as needed.

  • Must have or be able to obtain a TWIC card within 30 days of employment.
  •  

     

    Preferred

  • One (1) year of experience operating a forklift at OSHA standards.
  • Experience in industrial painting

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Primary

  • Performs routine and preventative maintenance to empty containers to include sweeping, washing and cleaning empty containers.
  • Prepare equipment to be painted including bending, pulling, pushing, shaping and straightening required to repair/refurbish equipment.
  • Inspects empty containers for damage and tags them accordingly.

  • Paints the exterior of all containers to include markers identifying containers with the use of stencils.
  • Performs the clean-up duty associated with the container repair work.
  •  

  • Drives a company truck to the work site.
  • Operates a forklift to empty yard garbage bins or to transport materials within department.

 

Secondary

  • Assists the Container or Chassis Mechanic II on minor repairs which include roofs, welding, gaskets, floors, doors, restructure/repair chassis, replace/repair chassis’ brakes, as needed.
  • May assist with the agriculture inspections.
  • May assist with strapping and securing export vehicles.
  • Must maintain a clean work area, free of debris or safety hazards.
  • Additional duties as assigned.

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Subjection to physical and/or DOT Screening may be required along with other tests as applicable.
  • The employee is continuously required to stand, walk, grasp, forward reach and use eye-hand coordination.
  • The employee is continuously required to push/pull up to 10 pounds.
  • The employee is frequently required to reach overhead and lift, up to 30 pounds, carry up to 20 pounds.
  • The employee is occasionally required to sit, climb, forward bend, squat, kneel, crawl, twist, pinch, use finger dexterity, respective foot and wrist motion and eye-hand-foot coordination.
  • The employee is occasionally required to lift, up to 75 pounds and push/pull up to 50 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

 

SAFETY REQUIREMENTS:

  • Report safety hazards.

  • Wear appropriate PPE as instructed by immediate supervisor.

  • Refuse any unsafe tasks or operation.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED:

Receives direct supervision from the Mechanics’ Header and Mechanics’ Manager; may assist other Mechanics in the performance of container or chassis repairs.  Does not exercise supervision over any position.

 

CONDITIONS:

  • Exposure to all possible environmental factors such as extreme heat, rain, wind and high humidity during day and night shifts.
  • The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts.
  • The employee is occasionally exposed to dust, fumes, and airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals.
  • Moderate to high noise volume.
  • Moderate vibration with use of hydraulic seating system.
