POSITION SUMMARY:                

This position is responsible for supervising the mechanics functions as well as aiding in the maintenance and repair process of chassis and flat rack equipment. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.   • Must possess five (5) years’ experience repairing and restructuring chassis.
  • Must possess three (3) years’ experience in a supervisory role managing people, to include coaching personnel, addressing disciplinary issues and completing performance evaluations.
  • Must have two (2) years of experience driving one or more of the following heavy equipment: mule jockey, Empty Handler, or Top loader or a CDL-A license with one (1) year of experience operating heavy equipment.
  • Must possess advanced Stick and MIG welding experience.
  • Must possess strong knowledge of DOT regulations.
  • Must have knowledge of methods, techniques, and procedures involved in maintenance repairs and replacement.
  • Must be able to become certified to operate company equipment required for repair and maintenance within the first 90 days of employment.
  • Must have basic computer skills to enter work orders and maintenance forms in DST system.
  • Must have the ability to read, write and perform basic math.
  • Must have the ability to work from instructions and technical manuals.
  • Must have the ability to perform and give written and verbal orders.
  • Must be able to accurately process alpha/numeric information.
  • Must have the ability to function effectively in a fast paced, team-oriented work environment.
  • Must have the ability to work independently with limited supervision and strong initiative.
  • Must have the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees.
  • Must have the ability to think logically, follow procedures, instructions and make sound decisions.
  • Must be able to work (flexible hours) extended hours including nights, overtime, weekends and holidays.
  • Must have or be able to obtain a TWIC card within 30 days of employment.



  • Previous work experience in the shipping/transportation industry.
  • Previous work experience in repairing flat rack equipment.





  • Leads, supervises and works with assigned personnel in the performance of their duties. Develop employees by training, cross-training, evaluating, and disciplining.
  • Coordinates shop work and determine priorities for mechanics, keeping the preventative maintenance program as the main goal.
  • Follows the Institute of International Container Lessors (IICL) guidelines as required by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), to assure the safe operating condition of all chassis and flat racks equipment for road use.
  • Performs systematic inspections, restructures, estimations, and produce work order repairs for chassis and flat rack equipment.

  • Involved in the analysis and monitoring of operations to help improve efficiencies and ensure potential problems are averted.
  • Maintains safety standards and procedures. Ensures that all relevant certification and refresher training is attend and maintained to the appropriate level for his position and that if his subordinates.

  • Ensures that the assigned jobs of the mechanic personnel are entered accurately and in a timely manner in the Distribution System Technology (DST) computer database.
  • Determine reason for part and component failures and replaces or repairs as required.
  • Builds and maintain a positive work environment for personnel.
  • Ensures that the Chassis Mechanics department is adequately staffed.
  • Coordinates extra assistance staff for other departments and track overtime hours per employee, as needed.
  • Facilitates weekly safety meetings and provide employees with on-the-job training.
  • Keeps employees abreast of all company communication.
  • Approves absence requests and reconciles employee timecards on a weekly basis to include missing punches, lunch cancellation, overtime approval, floating holidays, etc.

  • Collects and submits the equipment inspection checklists on a daily basis.

  • Assist in the cleaning and organization of the shop, chassis parts room and other areas in the maintenance facility.
  • Maintains equipment records.
  • Maintain documentation of preventive maintenance performed in the Distribution System Technology (DST) computer database or hand-held computer.
  • Communicate with dispatchers and drivers regarding equipment damage or breakdown.
  • Responds to chassis accidents as needed.

  • Maintain a clean and safe work environment by cleaning, organizing, removing safety hazards, oil spills, spare parts, etc. within chassis repair shop operations.
  • Maintain awareness of surroundings (i.e. vehicles, people checking equipment, etc.) at all times.
  • Perform all functions in accordance with operation and safety guidelines.



  • Performs mechanic skills including, but not limited to, electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic, & troubleshooting to repair tires, brakes, electrical lights.
  • Operates equipment (9K and 52K forklifts and mule) to move containers, chassis, pallets, and other items as needed.
  • Assists in the performance of the preventive maintenance (PM) program and Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) inspections on all chassis or containers on an annual basis.
  • Performs other related tasks as assigned.



  • Subject to physical and/or DOT Screening is required along with other tests as applicable (DOT is required. (Only if operating equipment)
  • The employee is frequently, required to sit (while driving), grasp and exercise eye-hand coordination and eye-hand-foot coordination.  (If operating equipment)
  • The employee is frequently, required to grasp, exercise repetitive wrist motion, and finger movement.
  • The employee is continuously, required to talk and hear.
  • The employee is continuously, required to stand, walk and exercise repetitive foot motion.
  • The employee is continuously, required to climb, balance, bend forward, squat, kneel, crawl, twist, pinch and reach overhead.
  • The employee is occasionally required to lift, carry, push or pull up to 55 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

Receives direct supervision from the Assistant Manager; may assist mechanics in the performance of the job functions. Exercises supervision over mechanic personnel in the repair service and maintenance of related equipment.



  • Work is performed primarily in the shop/outdoors; exposed to all possible environmental factors such as extreme heat, rain, wind and high humidity during day and night shifts.
  • The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts.
  • The employee is occasionally exposed to dust, fumes, and airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to high.
  • Moderate vibration though hands when using power tools and throughout body when operating power industrial equipment.
