This position is mainly responsible for the daily monitoring of operations in the Container Maintenance and Empty Yard which includes supervision of container repair, import empty, export empty, and street returned empty container storage. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily, and be an effective communicator to all internal and external stakeholders. Receives direct supervision from the Yard Superintendent and exercises supervision over the container repair mechanics, clerks, and empty yard operators.



  • Responsible for the proper staffing and equipment utilization of the equipment operators and machinery in the Empty Yard during daily terminal and vessel operations.
  • Responsible for the supervision of container repair mechanics, clerks, and operators during daily operations.
  • Reports all equipment control issues to the equipment control person designated for the steamship line.
  • Provides timely estimates for the cost of container repairs to steamship line personnel.
  • Creates and finalizes electronic work orders to record and track container maintenance via the AS 400 and MS Excel.
  • Ensures all empty containers are ready for delivery by completing thorough inspections and verifying that the containers are properly segregated within the empty container yard.
  • Perform requested daily equipment inventories, including but not limited to chassis, containers, and flat racks, via handheld device.
  • Coordinate government USDA inspections, and other surveys for empty containers prior to stuffing.
  • Maintain a clean work area, free of debris or safety hazards, and awareness of surrounding (i.e. vehicles, equipment, etc.)
  • Perform all functions in accordance with operation and safety guidelines.


  • Coordinates with the rest of the terminal operations department on special welding projects when needed.
  • Serves as back up supervisor for Chassis Mechanics when needed.
  • Performs other related tasks as assigned.




  • Must have 3-5 years prior experience working in a container terminal yard, empty depot, or container maintenance yard.
  • Must have a minimum of (1) experience in container maintenance and repair
  • Must have a minimum of two (2) years prior experience in a supervisory or in a foreman role
  • Must have High School diploma or equivalent
  • Basic computer knowledge
  • Must have excellent verbal and written skills
  • Must be able to read and write English
  • Must have the ability to function effectively in a fast paced, team oriented work environment
  • Must have the ability to work independently with limited supervision and strong initiative
  • Must have the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees
  • Must have the ability to think logically, follow procedures, instructions and make sound decisions
  • Must be able to work (flexible hours) extended hours including nights, overtime, weekends and holidays



  • Subject to physical and/or DOT Screening is required along with other tests as applicable
  • The employee is frequently required to reach forward, exercise repetitive foot and wrist motion and finger dexterity
  • The employee is frequently required to talk and hear
  • The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, climb, bend-forward, squat, twist, reach overhead and pinch
  • The employee is occasionally required to sit (while driving), grasp, and exercise eye-hand coordination and eye-hand-foot coordination
  • The employee is regularly required to use their fingers
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus


  • Outdoors, exposure to all possible environmental factors such as extreme heat, rain, wind, and high humidity during day and night shifts
  • The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts
  • The employee is continuously exposed to dust, fumes, and airborne particles
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to high
